Skincare Routine

May 13, 2020

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but a skincare routine is her most consistent and rewarding friend.  A good skincare routine can help prevent wrinkles, maintain acne, and generally keep your skin (which is the largest organ in your body) healthy! But it also can save you a lot of money in the long run by preventing expensive trips to a dermatologist.

The first step to creating a skincare routine is knowing your skin type. Using products for the wrong skin type can lead to sensitive or irritated skin as well as frequent breakouts.

Here are a few common skin types;

Normal skin is skin that is balanced, doesn’t have a ton of acne, not too oily and not too dry.
Dry skin has a lot less sebum (the oil your sebaceous glands create) than normal skin and typically creates dry patches.

Dry skin has a lot less sebum (the oil your sebaceous glands create) than normal skin and typically creates dry patches.

Oily skin is skin that has an overproduction of sebum and can result in more acne than normal skin.
Combination skin can be skin that is oil on the T-zone and forehead and dry on the cheeks or oily on the cheeks and dry on the T-zone and forehead and there are often large pores in these areas of the skin, especially on the nose.
Sensitive skin is also very common and is skin that is easily irritated by skin products.

Now that you know your skin type it’s important to know the foundation of every successful skincare routine. Our general rule includes 4 basic steps to be done twice daily which are;

  1. Cleansing
  2. Toning
  3. Serum
  4. Moisturizing

We will occasionally add in a facemask at night one or twice a week to help rejuvenate the skin and we also try to be very conscious that the products we are using have SPF in them and if they don’t add that as a separate step into our routine.
Picking products that you like and building off of these basics can take some time. You generally want to use a product twice daily, for over six weeks, to start to notice a difference. We really love M’lis products and will be linking a couple of our favorites.

Cleanser is the first, and most important step. Cleansing removes excess oil and dirt off of our skin. Washing your skin twice daily will have enormous benefits. For a great cleanser click here.

What is toner? Our second step isn’t heard as commonly as a cleanser. Toner is an absorbing liquid that helps balance the pH of your skin and really reigns in the acne. It’s amazing for your pores and beneficial for acne prone skin. You can find our favorite toner here.

The next step is serum and what can’t it do?? Serum helps refine pores, smooth out your skin, reduce lines and wrinkles, and really helps the skin to keep all of that moisture in. The best serum probably in the whole world is linked here.

And last but not least, moisturizer rocks our world. Moisturizing reduces the chances of having skin issues, especially those prone to dry skin. It also fights wrinkles and helps your skin stay young. If you ask anyone older than yourself, they’ll probably tell you their greatest regret in life is not moisturizing more. That being said, link for our favorite moisturizer is here.

There you have it! We hope this helped you create a skincare routine that perfectly fits your needs. We would love to hear from you! If you have any questions or comments let us know on instagram at @saluslifestyles.
