Skip the Elevator, Take a Flight

January 15, 2019

Don’t miss it: Take the stairs challenge and download can be found at the end of the post.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: If there are less than 3 flights of stairs to get to your destination, take them.

Why? Walking a flight of stairs is one of the best exercises you can do. It builds muscle mass, since you’re fighting gravity, and it burns calories.

Why else? Climbing just eight flights of stairs a day lowers average early mortality risk by 33% Seven minutes stair climbing a day can halve the risk of heart attack over 10 years. Just two minutes extra stair climbing a day is enough to stop average middle age weight gain.

Look, I totally get it.. the elevator and stairs are literally side by side and yet I’d rather wait for the elevator to arrive (which sometimes takes forever) than climb the stairs. Yes, it’s easier to ride in the elevator as it requires no physical effort on your part, but when you think of the health benefits that stair climbing brings in its wake, maybe you’d think twice before stepping into an elevator.

Let’s look at 5 more reasons you should skip the elevator and take the stairs…

Climbing stairs increases the heart rate and ensures good blood flow to all parts of the body. Apart from the heart, the lower muscles, working against gravity, get toned, strong and less fatigued.

Did you know that climbing a flight of stairs causes chemical endorphins to be released? Well, these neurotransmitters spread a feeling of physical wellbeing and makes you feel happy and calm. In addition, your cholesterol levels are also brought under control by lowering the bad cholesterol and raising the good. You also become more focused and can concentrate better.

Studies show that those who take the stairs save time when compared to those who wait for the elevator and all of us know that it is to a great extent true, especially when you just have a few flights to climb. Taking two flights of stairs is believed to save about “72 kilowatts of energy” and energy saved is good for the environment.

Yes, it’s true: studies have shown that stair climbing, which is considered vigorous-intensity physical activity, burns more calories per minute than jogging. Stair climbing expends 8 to 9 times more energy than sitting and about 7 times more energy than taking the elevator. As an added bonus, you burn calories not only on the way up but also while going down the stairs!

Enough said.
