The Power of Maca

Hi there! I hope you’re having a beautiful Monday so far. One thing about me is that I’m a pretty big geek when it comes to learning about different healthy ingredients out there. There is so much to learn so I’m always browsing my local Whole Foods store so that I can discover new superfoods to share with you. So, when I recently came across Maca powder I knew I found something good. I quickly purchased it and did my research.
I learned that maca, a root related to the radish, is native to the High Andes in Peru. It’s called the peruvian ginseng because of it’s ability to boost energy. It is also known to clear up troubled skin, provide a boost of vitamins, balance hormones, and increase muscle mass. And, did I mention that it’s also a natural aphrodisiac? After realizing that it had quite a few powerful benefits I couldn’t wait to get in the kitchen and try it out for myself. But before we discuss recipes let’s dive deeper into the details..

1. Vitamins and minerals
It is naturally high in calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, sterols (6 found), up to 20 essential fatty acids, lipids, fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and amino acids. Imagine trying to take a pill for each of those! Now you don’t have to. You can get it through your food — just add maca powder.
2. Balances hormones and acts as an aphrodisiac
Maca root has been shown to be extremely beneficial for balancing hormones, increasing sexual function, and managing hormonal problems such as hot flashes, menopause, and PMS. It naturally balances your hormones and increases fertility which is a beautiful thing because you can try the holistic approach before turning to a prescription. It can alleviate cramps, body pain, hot flashes, anxiety, mood swings, and depression. (If you are pregnant or lactating you should avoid taking maca.)
3. Boosts Energy
Maca has been known to be an incredible aid if your energy is low. Before grabbing a latte or energy drink you could experiment with a small amount of maca. It doesn’t have any caffeine or processed sugar so you know you’re not consuming unhealthy ingredients just to get through the day. It boosts your energy in a balanced and sustained manner and won’t stress your adrenal glands like most energy enhancers.
4. Increase muscle mass
It contains 4 grams of protein per tablespoon so you can mix it into your pre-workout shake. When used in conjunction with a good workout regime you might notice an increase in muscle mass.
5. Balance mood
Some have said that maca has helped with anxiety, depression, and stress.
6. Promotes clear skin
I was unable to find a ton of information about maca helping with your skin but I did read about quite a few people seeing great results after adding it to their diet. I found that it can help protect your skin in extreme temperatures as well. When I struggled with acne I was open to just about anything to see if it would help my skin heal, so it’s certainly worth a shot!
So get creative — maca can be put in just about anything! It has a slight caramel flavor and it’s a bit nutty so I tend to put it in sweeter recipes. My favorite thing to do is put a scoop in my overnight oats. I add bananas and coconut flakes and it’s divine. It has become one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. Try the recipe below!
1.5 tbsp chia seeds
1 cup almond or coconut milk
1/3 cup regular, rolled oats
coconut flakes (add as much as you’d like)
1 very ripe banana or your choice of fruit
slivered almonds
2 teaspoons of maca powder
Mix everything together and put it in a mason jar in the refrigerator overnight (or for at least 6 hours) When you wake up it will be ready to eat! This is delicious, filling, and easy to grab on the go. If you don’t like the cold oats you can warm them up.
